Elgin Echo, Thur., 18 Feb. 1909.

Last week Albert Light received a message from Fairmont, Minnesota, which stated that Fred Wohlheter, former resident of this city, had passed away the previous Saturday. A telegram received Friday bore the sad intelligence that Mrs. Fred Wohlheter was also dead and that the husband and wife would be buried Sunday last. Charlie, a son, who was in another state, had started for home to attend his father's funeral and became storm-staid. The body of the father was held awaiting the son's arrival and in the meantime the wife and mother sickened and died.

Fred Wohlheter was one of the early settlers of Elgin and those who came here in an early day remember him as one of our first merchants. The first store he conducted was on the lot where Jasper Riche's house now stands. He then removed to the building now known as the Christ property where he conducted a general store but afterwards converted his stock into a hardware. After building the brick building now occupied by C. S. Holstanson he removed his hardware stock into it, where he continued business for some time. After leaving here the family went west and then removed to Minnesota, and about a year ago locating at Fairmont, that state.

Mrs. Wohlheter's maiden name was Magdalena Light and there is one brother, Albert Light, of this city; and three sisters, Mrs. George Wander, of Clermont; Mrs. John Spahr, of West Union; and Mrs. Engler, of Clayton, besides other relatives and friends now residing in this state.

The many old time friends in Elgin and vicinity will deeply regret the passing of their old time associates and friends.
