Elgin Echo, Thursday, 25 October 1906.

Philip Dowse, the subject of this short sketch, was born at Devises, near the city of Bristol, England, October 8th, 1835, and died at his home in Oelwein, October 20, 1906. He came to this country with his parents when fifteen years of age. The family first settled at Wilmington, Ill., but removed to Auburn, this country, in the spring of 1855. In 1858 he was married to Anna Myers and six children came to bless the union, one son dying in infancy, and a daughter, Lula, wife of J. A. Hoagland, died in 1895. The parents of deceased have also passed on. He is survived by a sorrowing wife, a sister and daughter, Mrs. E. H. Burlingham, of Oelwein, and sons, Edwin, of Oelwein, George, of Fayette and Ralph, of Chicago, besides other relatives and friends.

Monday, just before the noon hour, a number of our citizens went to the depot to pay a last tribute of respect to the memory of Philip Dowse, whose lifeless form arrived from Oelwein and was taken to our cemetery and laid to rest. His death is deeply deplored by the whole community and especially among our older citizens with whom he had lived, planned and toiled to make Elgin the business center it is today. Philip Dowse was one of the men who are a benefit to a town. For years he conducted a grist mill at this place, was postmaster and justice of the peace. He was always in the foremost ranks when an enterprise agitated and one who lavishly gave of his worldly goods for the benefit of the city wherein he resided. He was a good neighbor, a true friend and a desirable citizen. Now that his lifes work is over his old neighbors speak kindly of him and his many good deeds. A fitting tribute to a man among men. May his be a peaceful sleep he has rightfully earned.
