Elgin Echo, Thursday, 22 August 1912. (condensed).

Last week the Echo made mention of the sudden death of John Brackin, which occurred Wednesday, August 14, 1912, as he approached his front door he fell forward and in a very short time died. He had sustained a paralytic stroke.

John Brackin was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, July 31, 1835, and remained in Ohio at the home of his family until he was twenty years of age when he came to Iowa, and after a short time located on land in Pleasant Valley township. January 16, 1864, Mr. Brackin was united in marriage to Sarah E. Butler, who was born in Lawrence county, Illinois, January 31, 1846. To them were born twelve children; Rebecca Jane is the wife of Daniel Brause, of Union township; Cornelius E., deceased; Clara Belle is the wife of Aug. Brause, of Pleasant Valley township; William Henry is at home; Maggie May is widow of W. A. Werry and resides in West Union; Edna Louise is the wife of Fred Lehman, of La Porte City; John B., of Pleasant Valley township, married Louisa Miller; Jessie is the wife of William Miller, of near Clermont; Benjamin Harrison and Richard are at home; and Edith and Sarah died in infancy.

Mr. Brackin was a splendid type of manhood, honorable in his dealings with his fellowmen and his word was as sacred as an oath. He was a lover of outdoor life and the bay of the hounds was music to his ears. In his occupation of farming he was successful to a marked degree and counted as one of our largest land holders. His departure is regretted by the whole community and sympathy is extended to the bereaved widow and family by all.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the M.E. church in West Union and were in charge of the Knight Templar Lodge, of which he was a member, and were attended by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends. Interment was made in the cemetery there.
