Walter H. Finke was born at Cincinnatti, Ohio, July 31, 1854, and passed away at his home in this city Sunday morning, December 08, 1912. When a child of two years of age his parents removed to Dubuque, Iowa, where he grew to young manhood and commenced his business career, being associated with W. P. Allen in the drug business in that city. Later he went to Lemars, Iowa, where he engaged in the same business and from there to Colorado where he spent time in the gold fields. He returned to Iowa locating in Volga City where he again engaged in the drug business. There he met Miss Ella Phillips and on April 02, 1879, they were united in marriage and shortly after came to Elgin, where he again engaged in the drug business and where the family have since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Finke were the parents of one child, a daughter, Rosa Ella, who died when five years of age.
For over 30 years Mr. Finke was one of our prominent business men and only because of declining health did he dispose of his business in May of 1911. He was a member of the I.O.O.F Lodge and the Legion of Honor holding many positions in both. For over 25 years he was connected with the public schools being at one time a secretary of the board of education.
Deceased is survived by his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Saunders and Miss Emma Finke, and a niece, Miss Emma Saunders, of Dubuque, together with other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at his late home Wednesday afternoon in charge of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of this city, Rev. Graham delivering a short address. The body was laid beside that of his little daughter who had died many years before.
The relatives attending the services from out of town were, his sisters, Miss Emma Finke and Mrs. Saunders and her daughter, of Dubuque; Mrs. Goodwin, of Volga; Mrs. H. Palmer of Hawkeye; Mr. and Mrs. Phillips and nephew Mr. Phillips of Volga; C. B. Phillips and son of Volga; and O. A. Phillips and wife of Arlington who came on the afternoon train, to late to attend.
