Elgin Echo, Thursday, 20 June 1895.

We learn of a terrible accident which occurred to John Stephens, one of the prominent citizens of Illyria township. He had a vicious bull which had driven his son and several other persons out of the field where he was, but Stephens seemed to have no fear. On Saturday last, he went into the lot where the animal was and was attacked by him, gored and tossed about, the shoulder was broken and he received wounds about the head and elsewhere, which proved mortal. He died the evening of the same day. Deceased was born in Worcester, England, Jan. 21st, 1830, and was consequently 65 years, 4 months and 25 days old at the time of his death. He was brought to this country by his parents in the same year as his birth. He settled in Fayette County in 1864, and has since resided in Illyria township, where his death occurred. Mr. Stephens was a man of strong likes and dislikes, a firm friend and a determined enemy, but in all the relations of life an upright honorable man; all will lament the terrible ending of his life.
