Elgin Echo, Thursday, 02 October 1902.

Last Friday afternoon the people of this vicinity were saddened and shocked on hearing of the sudden death of Peter Lehman, one of the most respected citizens of Elgin. He was engineer at the Sutter saw mill and in attempting to put a belt on the engine pulley got caught between the belt and pulley and was instantly killed.

Peter Lehman was born June 8, 1840, in Canton Bern, Switzerland, and came to this country with his parents in 1852 and settled in Fayette county, coming to Elgin in 1857. On January 8, 1867, he was united in marriage with Mary Miller. Four children blessed this union, two of whom survive him. His wife died March 6, 1885. May 10, 1888, Mr. Lehman was remarried to Mary Moser and four children were born to them, three of whom are living.

Peter Lehman died Friday, September 26, 1902, at the age of sixty-two years, three months and eighteen days. His death occurred just nine years after the death of his father. There were twelve children in the Lehman family, nine brothers and three sisters. At a family reunion held at the old home one mile east of Elgin February 22, 1891, all the children were present. Since that date four brothers and one sister have passed away.

The deceased had been a resident of Elgin for half a century and was loved and respected by all who made his acquaintance. He was a kind loving husband and father. It can truthfully be said that he was one of nature's noblemen. The bereaved relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of this community.

Funeral services were held in the German Baptist church, conducted by Rev. R. J. Hack. Interment took place in the Elgin cemetery.
