Elgin Echo, Thursday, 27 November 1902.
Our community was saddened by the intelligence that another pioneer, another land mark, one who has been identified with the history of Fayette county for nearly half a century, had passed away Tuesday evening, Nov. 25, 1902, and was no more.
Saloma Miller was born Aug. 29, 1829, in France. She was united in marriage to Antone Kern Feb. 5, 1851, and together they came to this country in 1855. Nine children were born to them, four of whom survive their parents. The husband and father died in May 1885. Mrs. Kern and S. Schappy were united in marriage Feb. 22, 1887. S. Schappy passed away two years ago last March.
Mrs. Schappy was seventy-three years old Aug. 29. She was always a very energetic and hard working woman, loved and respected by all.
The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon. The four surviving children, Lew Kern, Will Kern, Mrs. H. C. Bishop and Mrs. J. Schrick??, have the sympathy of all in their sad bereavement.
