Elgin Echo, Thursday, 4 October 1894.

Edward Brown, whose death occurred at his home in Clermont, Iowa, on September 29th, 1894, should justly be counted among the old residents of Fayette County.

He was born in the city of New York on April the 6th, 1823, where he resided for twenty-one years under the parents roof and where he served his apprenticeship as shopsmith. In 1844 he removed to Essex, Conn., were he carried on his business as contractor.

The westward tide of emigration brought him to Iowa and Fayette County in 1856, where he purchased and settled on a farm in Fairfield township. There he married to Miss Laura Deming on November the 29th, 1858, and remained until 1861, when they returned to Essex, Conn., spending a part of the time in New York City. In 1866 they once more returned to Iowa and located in Clermont where he purchased and operated the hotel well known among the traveling public as "Brown's Hotel", which business he successfully carried on until his advanced years compelled him to retire. His matrimonial tie was blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters, of which both sons and one daughter have preceded him in death. He leaves his wife and one daughter, together with a large number of relatives and many friends to mourn their loss. His earthly remains were laid away in the Clermont cemetery on October 1st, 1894, in the presence of a large number of friends.
