Coranel Frieden

Coranel (Rothlisberger) Frieden, 95, of Elgin, Iowa died Monday, July 15, 2013 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Center in Waverly, Iowa.

She was born January 1, 1918 to Walter Simon and Jessie Nell (Probert) Rothlisberger in their stone house in Illyria Township, Fayette County, Iowa. Coranel was baptized and confirmed at the Illyria Church in Elgin. She was the salutatorian and president of her graduating class from Elgin High School in 1934. After high school, she attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College and graduated in 1936. Coranel taught country school and she also taught in Maynard until she was married.

Coranel was united in marriage with Floyd Joseph Frieden on September 4, 1939 in the stone house in Illryria Township. Five children were born to this union, David, Dianne, Charles, Jessielee and JoNell. Coranel was a homemaker and a substitute teacher, as well as helping on the farm.

Coranel enjoyed needlework, reading, writing in her journals, playing cards, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Pittsburgh Steelers and she loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Illyria Community Church, Ladies Aid and the Illyria Home Study Club. Coranel was a Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher, she also sang in the choir and performed duets with her sister-in-law.

Coranel is survived by 4 children, David (Karen) Frieden of Swisher, Charles (Deb) Frieden of Elgin, Jessielee Frieden of Mason City, JoNell (Mike) Young of Waverly; a son-in-law, Ed Havens of Newton; 9 grandchildren, Jeff Frieden of Cedar Rapids, Joan Frieden of North Liberty, Mark (Amber) Frieden of Poynette, Wisconsin, Merrick (Arielle) Havens of Jacksonville, Florida, Jennifer Frieden of West Union, Blaine (Becky) Frieden of Mason City, Kimberly (Ben) Steines of Tiffin, Randi Young of Waterloo and David Young of Cedar Falls; 11 great-grandchildren, Courtney, Vanessa and Sara Frieden, Finley Frieden, William and Amelia Frieden, Kenli Peterson, Jacob and Jack Frieden, Cora and Isla Steines and 2 more on the way.

Coranel was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; her daughter, Dianne Havens; her great-grandson, Jonah Frieden; her parents and 2 brothers, Walter LeRoy Rothlisberger and John Werner Rothlisberger.

Visitation will be Friday, July 19, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Illyria Community Church, Elgin, Iowa.

Burial will follow at the Illyria Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa.
