Lillian Habeger

Lillian Lavanda Habeger, 94, Elgin, Iowa, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Home, West Union, Iowa.

She was born October 28, 1918 to Edwin and Marietta “Metta” (Miller) Krueger in Elgin, Iowa. Lillian accepted Christ and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Elgin as a young girl. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1936.

On February 26, 1937, Lillian was united in marriage with Abraham Habeger at the First Baptist Church in Elgin, Iowa. Three children were born to this union, Anthony, Terry and Vicky. Lillian was a homemaker and a secretary at Valley High School for 22 years, retiring in 1979. She lived on the farm for 70 years, 24 years alone after Abe passed away, before moving to West Union.

Lillian was a very active lifelong member of the First Baptist Church serving as Choir Director and singing alto in the choir, Sunday School Teacher, Bible Study Leader, leader of Women’s Ministries and Church Treasurer for many years. She was proud to be a lifelong Republican, she belonged to the Professional Business Women’s Association in Elgin, she was a 4-H leader and her and Abe were members of the American Shorthorn Association. She loved music, playing piano, public performances in a musical quartet in her early married years, quilting, sewing, in which she made many quilts for her family, friends, high school graduates and church members. She also enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, helping others and traveling extensively in the United States as well as Europe and Hawaii. She was happiest when active with her hands.

Lillian is survived by her children Anthony (Beverly) Habeger of Clermont, Terry (Nancy) Habeger of Markesan, Wisconsin and Vicky (Mel) Moore of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandchildren, Cynthia (Brett) Toms, Travis (Sharon) Habeger, Shawn (Wendy) Moore, Chad (Deanna) Moore, Holly Moore, Heidi ( Caleb Pourchot) Habeger, Hans (Jadie) Habeger, Holly (Mark) Schleicher and great-grandchildren, Seth and Tanner Habeger, Olivia Habeger, Spencer and Katy Toms, Ellee, Ethan and Gabriella Moore, Aurora and Madeleine Moore, Odin Pourchot and Cedar Schleicher.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband Abe Habeger on March 18, 1985; her parents; her brothers, Edward, Lyle and Kenton Krueger; and her sister, Esther O’Dell.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 25, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Friday.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Elgin, Iowa with Rev. Lee Boleyn as the officiant.

Burial will follow at Gods Acres in Clermont, Iowa.
