Selma Wenger

Selma Mae (Light) Wenger, 89, Downers Grove, Illinois, formerly of West Union, Iowa, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at Oak Trace Wellness Center in Downers Grove, Illinois.

She was born on February 9, 1924 to Louis A. and Emma (Dyphom) Light on a farm near Elgin, Iowa. Selma graduated from West Union Public School in 1942 and Upper Iowa University in 1944. She was an elementary teacher for five years in Maynard, Postville and Sioux City.

Selma and Robert F. Wenger were united in marriage on December 25, 1949 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa. Two children were born to this union, Steven Robert and Suellen.

Selma walked 2 to 4 miles every day. She was a tremendous bridge player, great cook and she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. In addition to being a den mother, room mother, and involvement with Girl Scout activities, Selma also spent 10 years delivering meals on wheels in Downers Grove.

Selma was a devout Christian - her mission was to spread the word about Jesus Christ. She was very active in church activities, including teaching Sunday school, being a deacon, organizing senior fellowship, LOGOS and supporting missionary work while serving at churches in La Grange and Downers Grove, Illinois. Most recently she was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Downers Grove.

Selma is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert F. Wenger; her two children, Steven Robert (Laura) Wenger of Louisville, Kentucky and Mrs. Jay (Suellen Wenger) Ledvina of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and her 4 grandchildren, Jordan Wenger, Christian Wenger, Lara (Christopher) Ledvina Valentine and Justin Ledvina.

Selma was preceded in death by her parents and her 3 brothers, Lyle, Emmett and Herbert Light.

There will be a Celebration of Life at the First Presbyterian Church in Downers Grove, Illinois at a later date.

Visitation will be Friday, July 5, 2013 from 1 - 2 p.m. at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa, with funeral services at 2 p.m. on July 5, 2013 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa. Burial will follow at the Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa.
