Lena Meyer was born in Milwaukee Wis., on August 3, 1854, and died in Postville, on Sept. 17, 1940, at the age of eighty-six years, one month and fourteen days. She was the eldest in a family of six children. At an early age she moved with her parents to Rossville, Iowa, where she lived until the time of her marriage.
On May 27, 1876, she was united in marriage with August Benson, who preceded her in death. They came from McGregor to Elgin in 1882. Here Mr. Benson with his brother, Elias, operated a general store for many years. To Mr. and Mrs. Benson four children were born: Jennie Benedict, deceased, Elizabeth Falb, Oscar, and Frances Capper.

With the passing of each old settler, one reviews the strength' an endurance with which they seem endowed. Mrs. Benson displayed these attributes throughout her life and keenly enjoyed her independence. She was a good mother and shared the troubles and sorrows of her children, remaining calm and dependable in any crisis. She loved her home and was content there up to the time of her last illness. Her friends will mourn a respected pioneer who met her final sickness with the same fortitude she exhibited during her life.
She leaves to mourn her passing three children: Mrs. Fred Falb of La Crosse, Wis., Oscar Benson of La Salle, Ill., and Mrs. Boies Capper of Postville; two grandsons, two great grandchildren, and many friends.
Funeral services were held at the Benson home Friday at 2 p. m. Rev. J. C. Warton of the Methodist church conducted the services. Casket bearers were, Chas. Capper, W. F. Kohler, C. B. Schori, F. D. Welch, W. C. Falb and G. J. Mosby. Interment was made in the Elgin cemetery.

Koevenig, Mrs. Anna DeSart, Mrs. Ed Riser, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schultz. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Meyer, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Christofferson, Keith Gray, Earl Abernathy, Mrs. "Ray Douglas, Mrs. Annie Kerr, Mrs. Carrie Ruff, Mrs. . John Kohrs and John Falb. Jr., of Postville, Mrs. John Halverson of Clermont, Adrian Riveland of Luana, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hecker and Mrs. J. E. Horgan of Postville.
