Gerald D. Schroyer, 88, of Harrold, SD, formerly of Arlington, Iowa passed away Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, SD.
Gerald Donald “Jerry” was born May 24, 1924 in West Union, Iowa to Otto and Victoria (Stahl) Schroyer. He attended school in West Union.
On February 12, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Mississippi for his basic training. He served a tour in the European War Theatre and received an honorable discharge on December 22, 1945.
On July 23, 1948 he married Artalee Phillips at the Presbyterian Church in Wadena, Iowa. To this union, one son, John was born. For many years, Jerry operated heavy equipment in road and building construction throughout Iowa. He loved and raised horses and participated in Saddle Club activities. In 1984, they moved to South Dakota near Harrold and he enjoyed every day, especially working with his friends and neighbors.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Artalee Schroyer of Harrold, SD; one son, John (Rose) Schroyer of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; one sister, Marie Taylor of Strawberry Point, Iowa; one brother, Richard Schroyer of West Union, Iowa and his many treasured South Dakota friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and George “Mick”; sister, Margaret Peterson and an infant brother, Ivan.
Visitation in Highmore, SD will be 4-6 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, at Luze Funeral Home, Highmore, SD.
Visitation in Wadena, IA will be 4-7 p.m., Thursday, March, 14, 2013 at the Wadena Community Church, Wadena, IA.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Wadena Community Church, Wadena, IA with Pastor Rusty Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Wadena Cemetery.
