Rita Ingeborg Downing, 69, Wadena, Iowa, died Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, Iowa.

She was born on March 6, 1944 to Färber Heinz and Amalie Margarete (Hägney) Schmidt in Mainz, Germany. Rita was baptized on March 12, 1944 at St. Hildegardis-Krankenhaus and confirmed on June 7, 1954 in Mainz, Germany

Rita was united in marriage with Glenn Edward Downing on March 20, 1976 in Rock Island Illinois. She became a United States Citizen on October 17, 1978.

Rita is survived by her brother, Harold Kaluis Schmidt; her sister, Hildegard Graf in Germany and a very special friend and care taker, Tim Corkery, Wadena, Iowa.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn in 2001; her parents and many other relatives in Germany.

Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2013 with a visitation one hour before services at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa.

Burial will be held at the Wadena Cemetery, Wadena, Iowa.
