Helen Richards

Helen Richards, 83, of Ames, died Saturday, April 21, 2001 at Covenant Center in Waterloo.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, April 24 at 2 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Richfield, Iowa, with Rev. Milton Johnson officiating.

Interment was in Alpha Cemetery, with Burnham-Wood Funeral Home of West Union handling arrangements.

Helen Berdean (Lange) Richards was born Sept. 6, 1917, the daughter of Herman and Dehlia (Reisner) Lange.

She graduated from Alpha High School in 1935, and worked around the Alpha and Lawler areas until she married.

She was united in marriage to Gerald Richards June 7, 1941 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stapleton.

Gerald Richards taught school in Rodman, Iowa for one year and was in the Coast Guard for a short time before moving back to Alpha and starting farming with his parents.

They lived and farmed in the Alpha area all of their lives, until Jan. 2001, when they moved to Ames to be with their daughter, Suzanne.

Helen Richards was a member of Eastern Star, and was a wonderful wife and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was an excellent seamstress and had made several wedding dresses.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald Richards; a son, Alden (Karen) Richards of Waucoma; one daughter, Susanne Fedeler and friend Kevin Watson of Ames; 3 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Ruth Weidemann of Montana and Verna Schott of Topeka, Kan.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Raymond Lange.
