Reuben Leo Lehman

Reuben Lehman, 89, of Elgin, Iowa, died Monday, July 2, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union following a long illness.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin, with Rev. Arley Ellingson officiating.

Casket bearers were Francis Butikofer, Leo Lehman, Tennis Foels, Matthew Frieden, Eugene Lehman and Mike Friederich. Honorary casket bearers were Floyd Possehl, Tom Foxwell, Harvey Paulson and Larry Winder.

Interment was in the Elgin Cemetery. Leonard Funeral Home of Elgin handled arrangements.

Reuben Leo Lehman was born in Elgin on May 28, 1912 to Samuel and Bertha (Friederich) Lehman.

He was educated in the Elgin Public Schools and graduated from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, in 1933.

He was united in marriage to Gertrude May Smith in Berwyn, Ill., March 21, 1942. Two children were born to this union: a daughter, Janet, and a son, Ralph.

In June of 1942 Reuben was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force and was discharged Dec. 1945 with the rank of technical sergeant. From 1958 until his retirement in 1975, Reuben was employed as secretary-treasurer of Garvey Grain, Inc., in Wichita, Kan.

He also served a number of years as a company advisor to Junior Achievement Companies, and was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and American Legion Post #352, both in Elgin.

Survivors include his son, Ralph, of Aurora, Colo., and his daughter, Janet Stucky of Wichita, Kan.

Reuben was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister, Florence Lenth.
