Postville Review, Fri. 13 Jan. 1911.

William Burling was born in England, Dec. 17, 1817. He was married to Elizabeth Southwell, Oct. 31, 1843. He came to America in 1850, tarrying for a time in Chicago, whence removing he lived in Stedbenson Co., Ill., until 1858, when he moved to Fayette Co., Iowa, settling near the site of the present town of Donnan. He has been a resident of this county since that time except some intervals spent with his son at Postville. He was twice married, the children of the first marriage being Mrs. Brooks, whose home is near Arlington; F. S. Burling, of Postville; Mrs. Alice Knowles, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Mrs. Lizzie Stevens, of Appleton, Minn.; besides one dying in infancy, and Jennie, who died about 20 years ago. His first wife died in 1862.

He was married to Mrs. Mary W. Clark in 1865. One son of this marriage, William, lives at Hawkeye; a step-daughter, the wife of M. N. Bopp, also resides at Hawkeye. Mr. Burling's second wife died in 1897.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1871 and has been a constant member thereof. His nature was of a simple, sincere, trustful type; with affection easily and swiftly responsive, he was truely loving and beloved.

He died at the home of Mrs. Brooks, Jan. 3, 1911. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Fayette, Thursday, Jan. 5, and were conducted by the Rev. Daniel M. Parker, once a pastor of the deceased. The remains were laid in a cemetery near Donnan.
