OBITUARY of MRS. RUTH ADRAIN

Ruth Marie Adrian, daughter of Lucinda and John Conner was born February 9, 1893 at Elgin, Iowa and died June 17th, 1976 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the Age of 83 years. Ruth was one of seven children, She grew up in the Elgin area and received her education from the Elgin schools.

As a young woman, she worked as a waitress on a Mississippi River Boat and these were some of the eventful years of her life.

In 1923 she was married to Mike Adrian, whom she met, while working on the River Boat. To this family four children were born: Jack, Letha, Paul and Marie.

Although, she was totally blind for 50 years, she took great pleasure and pride in doing her own house work, in connection with raising and caring for her children and great grandchildren. One of the greatest enjoyments of her life was to be able to hold and cuddle a small child, whether a relative or not.

Ruth was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elgin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mike, three brothers: Howard Leroy, Nelson and Clarence and two sisters: Mabel Gruver and Myrtle Learn.

Survivors are her four children: Jack Adrian of Elgin, Mrs. Paul Ryan of Des Moines, Paul Adrian of Brandon and Mrs. William (Marie) Schlee of Postville. Other survivors are one sister, Mrs. Grace Martin of Des Moines, 19 Grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 21 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Parris officiating.

Casket bearers were all grandsons. Burial was in the Elgin Cemetery.
