Myrten Strong

Myrten Dean Strong, son of L. Harold and Zella (King) Strong, was born January 10, 1933 in Illyria Township, Fayette County on a farm six miles east of West Union. He died Monday, April 15, 1996 at the age of 63.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Illyria Community Church. He attended Illyria #3 rural school and graduated from West Union High School. During high school, Myrten enjoyed football and FFA. Following graduation, he attended a farm operations course at Iowa State University in Ames.

On December 23, 1952 Myrten was married to Mary Enyart at the Postville Presbyterian Church. The couple had 2 sons and one daughter. They farmed near Postville for several years, near Frankville for 2 years, then south of Elgin until 1973. While farming, they received the Farm Bureau Safety Award for Iowa.

Myrten then worked for Fitzgerald Surge and Torkelson Pump before moving to California in 1980 where he worked for the R. D. Helms Company. While in California, he belonged to the California Feed & Granin, GEAPS, California Bean Growers and the California Warehouse Association. Myrten and Mary enjoyed travel throughout the West and entertaining family and friends for the Rose Bowl.

In 1990 they returned to Iowa. At the time of his death, Myrten was employed at the Dinan farm south of Elgin.

Myrten loved and enjoyed his family. A big part of his life was farming and his hobbies included fishing and watching football. He also loved his morning coffee stop with friends.

He is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cindy; a brother, Charles and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Elgin; 2 sons, David (Jill) and Bob (Becky); 4 grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Samantha and Cody; 2 brothers, Kenneth (Beverly) and Arthur (Pat); a sister, Iantha Staffenhagen; a sister-in-law, Peggy Strong; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 18, 1996 at the Illyria Community Church in rural Elgin, Iowa. Pastor Judy Deweber officiated.

Honorary casket bearers were Eugene and Anna Wenger, Robert and Glenna Enyart, Peggy Strong, Ellen Schroeder, Mary Dinan, Collen Dinan, Edgar McDonough and Lennie Stensland.

Casket bearers were Chris Strong, Frank McDonough, Ron Hills, Mark Dinan, Matt Dinan and Pat Dinan. Funeral arrangements were made by Leonard Funeral Home of Elgin. Interment was at Illyria Cemetery in rural Elgin, Iowa.
