Mrs. Fred Suckow Buried Tuesday

Funeral service for Mrs. Fred Suckow was held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and 2 o'clock in Zion American Lutheran church. Rev. E. C. Franke officiated and burial was in the West Union cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews, Leo, Ivan, Glen, Clarence, Raymond and Albert Jr. Schave.

Mrs. John Steffens presided at the organ and accompanied Mrs. Dale Allbee and Mrs. Clarence Schuchmann as they sang. Ushers were Clarence Strohschein and Kenneth Springer.

Sophia Schave, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schave, was born on Jan. 29, 1879, in Volga township, Clayton county. She was baptized on Dec. 3, 1879 in the Lutheran church at Clayton Center. When she was 10 years old her parents moved to a farm north of Ossian. She was confirmed in St. Peter's Lutheran church at Eldorado on May 26, 1893.

She was married to Fred Suckow Nov. 7, 1899 by Rev. G. Blessin. To this union was born 11 children: Otto, Waterloo; Viola, Mrs. Elmer Ihde, Monona; Henry, Castalia; Helmuth, Froelich; Esther, Mrs. Merlin Bachman, Fayette; Charlie, West Union; Lester, Castalia; Ruby, Mrs. Dwain Mabb, Hawkeye, and Ruth, Mrs. Henry Helgerson, Postville. Two children, Willie and Alpha, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Suckow spent all of her married life in Fayette county. She and her husband farmed for 29 years, living on four different farms. After retiring they lived in Clermont for nine years and in West Union for the past year.

She enjoyed very good health almost all of her life. In February of this year she became ill and spent a few days in the hospital. Thereafter she failed rapidly. She was taken to the local hospital Saturday afternoon. She was in a coma the last few hours and died at 8 o'clock that evening, at the age of 70 years, nine months and 21 days. Dropsy and heart trouble was the cause of death.

Mr. and Mrs. Suckow celebrated their golden wedding anniversary two weeks ago. She was an honorary member of the Mission-Aid of Zion Lutheran church.

Surviving are her husband and nine children, seven brothers, John Schave, Minneapolis, Minn.; Henry, Decorah; Fred, Waukon; George, Waukon; Will, Castalia, Albert, Clermont, and Charlie, Castalia; 30 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Submitter note: The child Willie died at the age of 2 months and 9 days of pneumonia. He is buried on top of Grandpa Henry Schave, Sr.'s grave. Willie was born July 23, 1900 and died Sept. 16, 1900. His birth record is recorded at the West Union Court House in Book 3, Page 478. The child Alpha/Alfa died at the age of 10 years by drowning. Born July 23, 1908; died July 30, 1918. Buried at the Centennial Cemetery.
