Gunda Martine (Johnson) Skaien

Mrs. Gunda Martine Skaien, daughter of Lauritz and Hannah Johnson, was born September 15, 1876 in Clayton county and passed away March 27, 1959 at her home at the age of 82 years, six months and 12 days. She was baptized and confirmed in the East Clermont Lutheran Church. She attended public schools in this vicinity.

On March 30, 1894, she was united in marriage to Anton L. Skaien. To this union two daughters were born: Helen, Mrs. O. L. Lien, and Louise, Mrs. Arthur E. Olson, who preceded her in death on November 8, 1936.

Mr. and Mrs. Skaien spent the first seven years of their 60 years of married life in Canton, South Dakota, returning to this community in 1901 when they settled on their farm east of Clermont, remaining there the rest of their lives. Mrs. Skaien was an active member of the East Clermont Church. Her health started to fail in March 1950 when she suffered a heart attack. She partially recovered her health but on January 30, 1959 fell and fractured a hip and was hospitalized at Decorah. She spent the last six weeks of her life in her home.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. O. L (Helen) Lien of Postville; two granddaughters, Mrs. Richard Vagts of Eldorado and Mrs. Norris Reierson of Clermont; two great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. H. O. Groth of Lake Crystal, Minnesota; one brother, Harry Johnson of Mitchell, South Dakota; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Henry, her husband and one daughter.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, March 31, from the East Clermont Lutheran Church, the Rev. John Kronlokken officiating. Interment was in the East Clermont cemetery.
