Anton L. Skaien, son of Lars and Thorina Skaien, was born December 17, 1869 in Fayette county and passed away at his home on November 27, 1954 at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 10 days.

He was baptized and confirmed in the East Clermont Lutheran Church. He attended public schools in this community and business college in Decorah for two years.

On March 30, 1894 he was united in marriage to Gunda Johnson. To this union two daughters were born: Helen, Mrs. O. L. Mr. and Mrs. Skaien spent the first seven years of their 60 years of married life in Canton, South Dakota, returning to this community in 1901 where they settled and remained on their farm in Clayton county until the present time. Mr. Skaien was active in church and community projects.

His health started to fail him in 1949 and in September 1950 he suffered a stroke. He recovered partially, to the extent that he could be up and about his home but being confined to his wheel chair the past two years.

Those left to mourn his death are his wife, Gunda; his daughter, Mrs. Helen Lien of Postville; two granddaughters, Mrs. Geraldine Reierson of Clermont and Miss Lavanda Olson of Cedar Rapids; one great grandson, Richard Reierson; one brother, E. C. Skaien of Long Beach, California; two sisters, Marie Skaien and Mrs. Andrew Anderson of Clermont and other relatives and friends.
