Grace Louise Simek
Grace Louise Simek, daughter of Christian and Louise (Hofer) Miller, was born on July 9, 1906 in Clermont. She died Friday, March 27, 1992 at West Union, Iowa. She was 85.
She was baptized on April 22, 1923 at the First Baptist Church in Elgin by the Rev. Lauer. She graduated from the Clermont High School in 1924 and from Upper Iowa University at Fayette in 1928.
On October 15, 1930 she married Len Theodore Simek at the First Baptist Church in Elgin. They owned and operated the Clermont Brick and Sand and the Clermont Hardware. Len died on May 28, 1953. Grace continued to operate the business until 1968.
Grace was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elgin, the Tabitha Society, and the Business and Professional Womens Club. She served as secretary of the Clermont School Board and the Clermont Historical Society, and she also served as director of the Farmers Savings Bank in Clermont.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother-in-law, Keith Thoma; a great niece, Brandi Chrystol Thoma; and a nephew, Mark Hansen.
Surviving are her sister, Chrystol (Oliver) Hansen of Durant, Iowa; 5 nephews, Michael, Jeffery and Christie Thoma, Ronald and Thomas Hansen; 3 great nieces, Elizabeth Grace and Kristin Michelle Thoma and Kathy Cravatta; 8 great nephews, Bryan, Aaron, Keith and Scott Thoma and Brett, Marcus and Matthew Hansen and David Jungjohann; a sister-in-law, Lavonne Walker; and nieces Beverly Dunkin and Barbara Lebin; and a nephew, Joe Walker.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 30, 1992 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Elgin, the Rev. Jon Cooke officiating. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Gods Acres Cemetery in Clermont.
