Hiram S. Oakes was born in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, March 16, 1839 and died at his home in Stanley June 1, 1917, aged 78 years, 2 months, 15 days. At the age of nine years he moved to Ogle County, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. He was the oldest of a family of seven children, four having preceded him in death.

September 23, 1880, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth A. DeVolt, and four children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. In 1862 he responded to the call of his county and enlisted in the Co. H 92d Ill. Vol. and served to the close of the war.

While still a young man he was converted and united with the Bethel M. E. church in Illinois. He has always lived an honorable, upright Christian life and was loved and respected by all who knew him. In 1875 he came to Iowa, later purchasing the farm where he lived until moving to Stanley seven years ago. About a year ago his health began to fail, kind hands administered to his every want but to no avail. He continued to grow worse until death came to release him of his sufferings. He fell peacefully asleep to awaken in that home where suffering is no more.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Masonic order, and the Grand Army of the Republic. The latter attended to last services in a body. A silk flag was placed upon his breast so with the flag he fought for when our country was in danger he was laid to rest.

He leaves to mourn his loss his devoted wife, two sons, Thomas and Etna, of Stanley, four grandchildren, one brother, W. L. Oakes of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, one sister, Martha Rock of Canby, Minnesota and a host of relatives and friends. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a just and true man and many hearts are made sad by his going from us. The last services were held from the M. E. church in Stanley on Monday at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Foote of Hazleton and Rev. Smith. They were attended by a large of of sympathizing friends. The relatives from out of town in attendance at the services were Mrs. M. E. Rock, Canby, Minnesota; Charles Oakes, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Oakes and Mrs. Gilbert Smith, Kings, Illinois; Mrs. Martha Hill, McIntosh, Minnesota; Mrs. Charles Sechler, Rockford, Illinois.
