Helen Barr was born August 25, 1852 in Glasgow, Scotland and departed this life on March 12, 1920, at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 16 days. She came to the United States in 1853 with her parents and settled in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where they lived until 1858, when together with her parents she came to Fayette County, Iowa, and for a time lived near Lima in the northern part of the county. Later they came to Jefferson Township which has since been her home with the exception of five years spent in Colorado.

On April 2, 1872, she was united in marriage to Anthony Hindle. To this union were born six children; John H., who lives on the home farm; Mrs. Margaret Cummings, who died May 13, 1910; Mrs. Hattie Brown of Algona, Iowa; Mary Helen who died in infancy; Mrs. Kate Brown, of Judson, Minnesota and Mrs. Grace Kaune of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. Mrs. Hindle's last illiness was brief and she passed quietly out of this life without suffering.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her four living children and sixteen grandchildren, also two brothers, Thomas Barr of Boyd, Wisconsin and George H. Barr of Redfield, South Dakota. Her husband preceded her in death over three years ago. While in Colorado Mrs. Hindle united with the Congregational church and on her return to Iowa she placed her membership in the Presbyterian Church at Oelwein. A large number of friends and neighbors mourn her passing. She was a kind mother and a good neighbor and being as she was, an old resident of the part of the county, her acquaintance extended to a large circle of friends. The funeral was held from the home on Tuesday. Services were conducted by W. G. Barr a nephew of the deceased. Interment in Oakdale Cemetery.
