Alta Reid, daughter of Charles L. and Sarah Butler Hough, was born on a farm west of Oelwein February 13, 1877 and died December 20, 1947 at her home near Oelwein at the age of 70 years, 10 months and seven days. When a girl she attended the rural schools of the community and as a young woman she taught in the rural schools of the community until she married.

On March 12, 1901 she was married to Jesse Reid of Fairbank. They made their home on a farm near Oran and since that time have lived on a farm since. They had four children; one son, Roy, preceded his mother in death in August, 1942. Surviving are her husband, Jesse Reid; one son, Floyd of Oelwein; two daughters, Fern of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Fae Wright of near Oran. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Sarah Hough of Des Moines; two sisters, Mrs. Beulah C----- (perhaps Crain) and Mrs. Florence McKim also of Des Moines; one brother, J. W. Hough of Chicago and two grandchildren, Sally Ann and Rayburn Reid.

Mrs. Reid has been in failing health since November, 1946, when she suffered a stroke; since that time she has been confined to her home.
