Martin Stoll (1826-1910)

Martin Stoll, Clermont's oldest business man died at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening after a four days illness from pneumonia. He began business here forty-eight years ago, and was still at eighty-three years of age the active proprietor of a shoe store. He had enjoyed remarkably good health, bidding fair to live many years yet, but while looking after the moving of a building, exposed himself on a cold day without an overcoat, and was attacked with the disease that carried him off. Mr. Stoll was a member of the German Baptist Church at Elgin, 3 1/2 miles from here, and was accustomed to walk to that town for worship and return each Sunday during good weather.

Martin Stoll was born in Germany October 26, 1826, and died at his home in Clermont February 16, 1910 at the high age of 83 years, 4 months. Mr. Stoll came to America in 1854 and after two years was married to Anna Kohler, who passed away a number of years ago. The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Church by Rev. J. G. Draewel, pastor of the German Baptist Church of Elgin, of which the deceased has been a member for over thirty years. The singing was led by the German choir of Elgin and deceased was laid to rest in Clermont Cemetery.
