ABRAHAM S. PETERS

Abraham Sovine Peters, son of William and Mary Peters, was born in Springfield, Ill., May 27 1849. He came to Iowa with his parents when very young and lived there until manhood. On Nov. 25, 1872, he married Jerusha Catherine Craft. To this union nine children were born, two of whom died in infancy, the others who are left to mourn his passing are, Chla, Mrs. Fran Lyon of Elgin; Charley Peters of Elgin; Gertrude , Mrs. George Moats, of Scotch Grove, Iowa; Bertha, Mrs. Lew Martin, of Sutton, N.D.; Guy Peters of McHenry, N. D.; and Pearl who resides at home. Besides these children there are thirty-two grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. The deceased has four brothers and one sister, one brother, Henry, of Bemedju, Minn., is living. The others preceded him in death. Three of these brothers served in the Union army under General Sherman’s command. He also has three half-brothers, one preceding him in death and two half-sisters who reside in Des Moines.

In 1898, he was baptized in the Christian Church. In 1908 the family moved to North Dakota, homesteading near Minot. In the spring of 1916 they moved near Glenfield, until five years ago when they moved into town.

In February, 1930, he contracted smallpox and since that time had been bedridden. He passed away May 9, at the age of eighty-three years eleven months and twelve days.

Funeral services were held in the Baptist church in Brainard, on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. J. Snyder of Elgin. The hymns were sung by Mrs. Sidney Patterson, Mrs. Daniel Craft and Herman Boyer. Dorothy Craft accompanied them on the organ. The casket bearers were, Lewis Becker, Joseph Peters, George Howard, Wesley Hanke, Reuben Howard and George Boyle. Burial was made in Brainard cemetery.
