SUMNER — Leona Marie Wedemeier, 86, of Sumner, died Saturday, Aug. 11, at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette.

She was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Sumner, daughter of Werner and Hulda Nolte Westendorf. She married Howard Levi Wedemeier on Oct. 30, 1945, at St. John Lutheran Church (Buck Creek), rural Sumner. He died June 14, 2003.

Mrs. Wedemeier cooked at the Twin Tower Cafein Cedar Rapids, the Ritz Cafe in Sumner for 15 years, the Sumner Bakery, started the deli at McAloon’s grocery store, and finally was head cook at Sumner schools. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Sumner, for many years.
Survived by: three sons, Dwight (Jan) of Sumner, Duane (Nancy) of Waterloo and David (Kim) of Leawood, Kan.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and thee sisters, Helen McClain of Vinton, Marva (Orlie) Schellhorn of Clarksville and Joyce (Jack) Gitch of Sumner.

Preceded in death by: a brother-in-law, Duane McClain.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church, Sumner, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
Memorial fund: has been established in her name.
