OELWEIN - The Rev. Frank Austin Mercer, 85, of Oelwein, died Friday, Aug. 10, in Oelwein.

He was born July 20, 1927, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, son of Alexander and Anna Rodgers Mercer.

He graduated from San Jose High School in California in 1945. Mr. Mercer then served in the U.S. Army until 1947. He graduated from Biola College (then in Los Angels) in 1953 and received an honorary doctorate from Los Angels Bible College in 1990. He was the pastor for Evangelical Free Church of Oelwein and Calvary Baptist Church of Cedar Rapids and was interim pastor for Grace Baptist Church of Waterloo, Grace Baptist Church of Waverly and First Baptist Church of Algona. He also taught and coached basketball and football at Culter Academy in Los Angles, coached basketball at Biola and was administrator for Whittier Christian High School in Whittier, Calif.

Survived by: his wife, MaryAnn; a daughter, Cathy James of Oelwein; a son, Tom (Sheryl) of Oak Hills, Calif.; a sister, Gertrude (Herb) Moser of Wichita, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Kim Hurley, Jeff James, Kristen (David) Frisch, Jon (Stephanie) James, Denette (Brian) Haney, Lyndsey (Jason) White and Drew (Teagan) Mercer; and 12 great grandchildren, Brittany, Anna, Tyler, Tommy, Trenton, Hunter, Sawyer, Cade, Ryland, Colton, Dawson and Kamdyn.

Preceded in death by: two sisters; and two brothers.

Memorial celebration: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church of Waterloo, with internment in California at a later date.

There will be no visitation or viewing. Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, is assisting the family.

Memorial fund: has been established in his name.

Frank will be missed by his family, who were blessed with a daily living example of how much Jesus loves us.
