Column two

John Burke was born October 22, 1864, in Union township, Fayette county, Iowa. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jackson Burke. He was married in 1891 to Mrs. Margaret Stillman of Fayette county. Together with his wife they were actively engaged in farming on their farm in Pleasant Valley township practically all of his life with the exception of the last year when ill health prevented him from active engagement in farm work.

His wife passed away December 3, 1922, and since that time he found much comfort and companionship in the company of his step-son, Harry Stillman and family and during his year of illness they gave him careful attention and for the past five months they lived in his home and gave him every loving care and attention possible to alleviate his suffering but death called him to his reward on January 1, 1928.

Through a life of honesty and thrift he accumulated a goodly amount of worldly goods which remains as a monument to a life well spent in honest industry. His neighbors speak highly of his kindness throughout their lifetime of association with him and many a tribute has been paid to him.

The relatives surviving him are his step-son Harry Stillman, wife and three daughters, namely, Susie, Georgie and Helen, and on brother William Burke, of Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted at St. Paul’s M. E. church by the pastor, Rev, Ernest J. Starr and burial was made at the cemetery three miles west of Brainard, on Thursday, January 5.
