Column twoOBITUARY NOTICE OF MRS. ELLEN COONEY
----
Born at Arlington April 27, 1859;
Died at Oelwein June 6, 1912.
--Death Was Sudden.Like a bolt from a clear sky came the shocking intelligence on Thursday evening, that Mrs. Cooney had passed away at her home on Second Avenue North, Oelwein, as the result of an attack of acute indigestion of only a few hours duration.
Ellen Newton was born on a farm near Arlington, Iowa, April 27, 1859, and was the sixth cild of Palmer and Harriette Newton. Her death is the first break in her family in 57 years. Her brothers and sisters are located as follows: Thomas, William and Earl Newton and Mrs. Besse Hutchinson all of Washington. Robert, at Arlington, John at Davis City, Iowa, Mrs. Liza Peck, Colorado, and Mrs. Anna Allen, Arlington.
On October 25, 1877, she was united in marriage to James Cooney at Arlington where they lived until the fall of 1902 when they came to Oelwein where he practiced law up to the time of his death on March on March 20, 1911.
To this union was born seven children: Thomas, the eldest, died at the age of 18 years. Earl, who has been for some time and is now located in Boise, Idaho; Besse, married October 6, 1909, to Wm.L. Sullivan, of Oelwein; Margaret who is at home, James at Hanford, California and Martin and Paul aged 11 and 7 years respectively who suffer most the loss of both father and mother in early childhood.
There is one grandchild, little Ellen Louise Sullivan, one year old.
Deceased was a lady of modest, retiring mature, and exalted principles, whose greatest happiness was found in caring for her family and her home, and loving and serving her God and finding in him consolation in the time of sorrow over the loss of her husband whom she has gone to rejoin.
She was baptised in West Union on June 9, 1911, by Rev. Father Regan and was being instructed in the Catholic faith at the time of he death, which was the faith of her deceased husband.
She was also an active member of the Catholic Ladies' Aid Society of Oelwein and held in high esteem by all who knew her; and those who knew her best loved her most as was attested by many beautiful floral offerings.
She, with her children remaining at home spent the past winter in the warmer climate of California, returning but a few weeks ago, and on Tuesday before her death had just returned from a visit to Arlington apparently in her usual health.
In her sudden death the family have lost a kind and loving mother, and the community in general extend deepest sympathy in their sad bereavement.
