Funeral services for Gene Henry Samek, age 80, of West Union, Iowa, formerly of Hawkeye, were held Saturday, November 26, at the West Union United Methodist Church. A private burial was held Sunday, November 27 in the West Union Cemetery.

Gene Henry Samek, son of Henry Martin and Viola Kathryn (Monroe) Samek, was born June 25, 1931 in Ossian, Iowa. Gene attended country school through the eighth grade and then continued his education in schools in Fayette, Waterville, and Waukon, Iowa. Gene followed in the footsteps of his father and two brothers when he enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed, along with his brother Marsh, aboard the Alfred E. Cunningham. He was very proud of the fact that he played with the Navy Drum and Bugle Corps. Gene was also proud that five of his children enlisted in the military, although he wondered why they chose the Army rather than the Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy, Gene was employed by City Laundering Company of Oelwein, Iowa for 21 years, first as a route salesman, then as a sales supervisor. Gene's other career was as a police officer for the City of West Union, starting in 1977 and ending in 1993, when he retired as chief of police.

On June 14, 1959, Gene married Anna Louise Schupbach of Postville, Iowa at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The Sameks moved several times between Hawkeye and West Union. They have resided the past four years in West Union. Gene enjoyed his home and neighborhood where neighbors knew they could find him almost every afternoon sitting in his glider at the edge of the garage.

Gene Henry Samek died Monday, November 21, 2011 at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Kim Samek and Pam Samek, a grandson, Zachary, three brothers, Glen Samek, Eugene Samek, Marsh Samek, and his parents-in-law, Herman and Helen Schupbach.

Gene is survived by his wife, Ann of West Union; 2 children from his first marriage, Kevin (Sue) Samek and Kolleen Samek, 8 children from his marriage to Ann, D'Ann (John) Woodward, Rocky (Julie) Samek, Darcy Samek, Tamara (Leo) Banwart, Teresa Anderson, Renee Samek, Jayne (Dave) Hasik and Shannon (Craig) Miki; 12 granddaughters, 11 grandsons, and a great-granddaughter.
