David W. Clements
One of West Union's most prominent citizens, and a leading member of the bar. of northeastern Iowa, passed away at his home in that city Tuesday morning, November 15*, 1910, at 4:45 o'clock.
He first saw the light of day July 6**, 1846, at County Antrim, Ireland and with his Scotch parents came to America in 1848, removing to Iowa in 1857. He entered the army during the civil war. joining the Eighth Iowa Cavalry. On his return home he located in West Union where he has made his home ever since.
He became interested in the study of law; graduated from the State University in 1874; returned to his home town where he has resided continuously since graduation, and by skill and unremitting attention to his business, built up a successful practice
Mr, Clements was among the most prominent Masons in Iowa. He was initiated in Clermont Lodge No. 160, at Clermont, April 18,1872, and later became Master of West Union Lodge No. 69; a member of Unity Chapter No. 62, Elgin, Iowa, and of Beauseant Commandery, Decorah, and of Zarephath Consistory, No. 3, A. & A. S. R. of Davenport.
In 1909 he was elected to the high position of Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Iowa and in the year 1910 the Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Stars elected him to the office of Grand Worthy Patron. Mr. Clements has thus held the highest office that could be bestowed by Iowa Masons and also the highest office within the gift of the O. E. S.
Mr. Clements was sixty-four years old at the time of death and leaves his wife, one son, Willard B., of Veedum Wisconsin, two brothers and many relatives and friends.
The cause of death was a general breakdown. The morning of election day he had to be taken from his law office to his home, in a collapsed condition. Since then he gradually failed until the end came.
Deceased was also a prominent Odd Fellow and member of other societies.
In his death Fayette County loses one of its most distinguished citizens and a man whose every word and act were for the interests of the country for which he fought and the betterment of his fellow men.
The funeral services will be held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, West Union, Saturday afternoon at one o'clock sharp, and will be in charge of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Iowa.
