Died at Elkader
Saturday afternoon word reached here that Frederick Ernst, who until a short time ago, had made his home in this city, had died at 2:30 o'clock that day. Mr. Ernst was a man a little past seventy-six years of age. He had resided in Iowa for over fifty years, most of the time in Highland township, Clayton county, where he was engaged in farming. A few years ago he retired and moved to this city. About three years ago he was stricken with an attack of paralysis from the effects of which he never fully recovered. His loving wife, a companion for over half a century, passed away some two years ago. After her death Mr. Ernst made his home with his sister, Mrs. A. Ely and her husband until last fall when he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. John Layton and family of Elkader. Ever since his sickness of three years ago, Mr. Ernst has been gradually failing, and his passing away, though sudden, was not entirely unexpected by those who were familiar with his sickness.
He was a veteran of the civil war, a man well liked and respected by all of his large acquaintance and one who helped with the upbuilding of our country both as a pioneer and a soldier. Funeral services were held at the Illyria church Monday and interrment was made in the cemetery there.
