Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)A Mass of Christian Burial for Albert G. Franzen, age 80, of St. Lucas, Iowa was held Monday, November 13 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas. The Rev. Marvin Salz was the Mass celebrant. Burial was in the church cemetery with Jim Franzen, Bob Franzen, Mike Roach, Steve Kuboushek, Tom Pippert, and Daryl Kuehner as casket bearers. Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.
Albert G. Franzen, son of Mike and Clara (Schmitt) Franzen, was born April 6, 1926, near St. Lucas, Iowa. He attended St. Luke's Catholic Church. In 1950 Albert joined the U.S. Army, serving as sergeant first class in the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. On August 20, 1952, Albert Franzen and Irene Croatt were united in marriage at St. Luke's Catholic Church. The couple farmed near Waucoma, Iowa. In December 1993, Al and Irene retired from farming and moved into their home in St. Lucas. However, Al continued to help on the farm. For many years Al served on St. Luke's Church Board and the Cemetery Board. He was a member of St. Luke's Rosary Society and the St. Lucas American Legion.
Albert G. Franzen died of cancer at his home on Thursday, November 9, 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, two nephews, and a niece.
Albert is survived by his wife, Irene of St. Lucas; 4 daughters, Judy (Mike) Roach of West Union, Iowa, Janice (Steve) Kuboushek of Spillville, Iowa, Diane (Tom) Pippert of Reinbeck, Iowa, and Bonnie (Daryl) Kuehner of Lawler, Iowa; two sons, James (Laura) Franzen and Robert (Julie) Franzen, both of Waucoma, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; 5 sisters, Marcella Blong of St. Lucas, Iowa, Anna Laura Leichtman of Mason City, Iowa, Edna Fay of Sumner, Iowa, Clarene Humpal of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Lorrena Bohr of Waucoma, Iowa; and 4 brothers, LaVerne (Rosemary) Franzen of St. Lucas, Iowa, Leo (Helen) Franzen of West Union, Iowa, Florian (Pat) Franzen, and Duane Franzen, both of Hawkeye, Iowa.
