Rudolph Meyer, one of the oldest inhabitants of Waucoma died at his home here Friday (8 Apr 1927) afternoon and an illness of only a few days. Mr. Meyer was born in Germany eighty-four years ago and came to America when a young man. He was married to Louise Rohius (difficult to read) of Chicago, and came to Iowa, living for a time at Cresco. The family home has been in Waucoma for nearly half a century and Mrs. Meyer died here twenty-six years ago. At the time of the Civil war Mr. Meyer enlisted in Co. D. 51 Illinois Infantry and was mustered out of the service in 1865. Mr. Meyer was a very sociable man and possessed the virtue of charity to a marked degree. Seven daughters are left: Lizzie, who has been the home keeper since her mother's death. Mrs. Clara Hayes of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Minnie Berg of Davenport; Mrs. Anna Gibbs of Waucoma; Mrs. Hulda Rabe of Linden; Mrs. Hattie Travis of Des Moines and Mrs. Victoria Penington of Dexter. All of them were present at the funeral which was held at the home Monday afternoon conducted by Reverend William Gifford. The remains were taken to the Waucoma cemetery, escorted by members of the American Legion, and military honors were accorded to one more comrade who has answered to the call of "taps".
