John R. Scothorn 1858-1916

John R. Scothorn died at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Bassett, near \
Corning, Saturday, January 29, 1916,'
at about 2:15, from leakage of the
heart. The funeral services were
held at the S. H. Bassett home, three
miles east of Corning Monday morning
at 11 o'clock, conducted' 'by Rev.
F. L. Roper, of the Corning Baptist
church. the remains were taken to
Oelwein, Iowa, Monday for interment.
Mrs. Gladys 'Badgett accompanied
Mrs. Scothorn to Oelwein.
John R. Scothorn was born in Boone
County, Kentucky, November 19, 1858,
being 52 years, 2 months and 10 days
old at the time of his death. He is
survived by his aged mother, who
resides in Kentucky, and one brother,
Charles Scothorn, also one nephew
and three nieces, beside his wife. Mr.
Scothorn was married' December 22,
1910, to Miss Adelia Scothorn, of Oelwein,
Iowa. On Thanksgiving day,
1915, Mr. and Mrs. Scothorn came to
the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Bassett
for a visit, the families having
been old neighbors in former days.
Mr. Scothorn had not 'been in the 'best
of health for about two years, and
during the past weeks failed rapidly.
The night before his passing away he
was conscious that the end of life's,
journey was not far distant, and requested
that "God be with you till we
meet again" be sung to him. During
the last hours of his life he called his
wife and friends to him and 'bade
them good'bye. He 'was appreciative of
the kindness of his loved ones and
friends, a patient sufferer and never
complained.
