J. R. Ross, the son of Jacob Hart and Emily Rairden
Ross, was born in Ripley county, Indiana, November
16, 1853 and died in Oelwein, April 9, 1918, aged
sixty-four years, four months and twenty-three days.
- September 21, 1876 he was united in marriage to
Louisa E. Hillman who preceded him in death
November 29, 1913. To this union were born seven
children, five sons and two daughters -- Gilbert who
passed away November 1905, Fred, Clay, Frank,
Bessie and Alice who survive him. There was a son
who died in infancy.
- From the date of his marriage he resided on a farm
west of Oelwein until the spring of 1904 when the
family moved to Oelwein. He was a pioneer of this
section, coming to this county with his parents in the
spring of 1854. They located on a farm which his
father entered from the US government. Some years
later he purchased this farm and owned it until 1917
when he sold it to his sons. Since coming to reside
in town he had been quite actively engaged in the real
estate business.
- Besides his sons and daughters he leaves to mourn his
passing five grandchildren, the one brother and two
sisters ---- Mrs. J. H. Tracy of Bovina, Colorado, Mrs. C. C.
Hillman of Denver, Colorado and E. N. Ross of Oelwein.
- Services were conducted from the Baptist church by
Rev. E. H. Gillet, pastor of the church. Interment in the
west side cemetery.Oelwein Register - 17 April 1918
