Dena Amanda Johnson, daughter of Andrew and
Anna Bertha Gurina (Olson) Mosby, was born on May 1, 1890 at Eldorado, Iowa. She passed away in the Community Memorial Hospital, Postville, Iowa on April 9, 1974 at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 8 days. Her funeral was held on Friday, April 12 at 3:15 p.m. at the East Clermont Lutheran Church, rural Clermont, Iowa. Rev. Clarence Johnson officiated at the services. Burial was in the East Clermont Lutheran Church Cemetery. Casket bearers were Donald Lamborn, James Anderson, Alvin Halverson, Orvin Reierson, Millard Bilden, and Quinton Olson.

Dena was baptized on July 13, 1890 and confirmed October 22, 1905. On February 28, 1914 she was united in marriage with Edward J. Johnson. To this union were born three sons and one daughter. They have lived on the same farm since 1917. She was a member of the East Clermont ALC and of the American Legion auxiliary at Clermont, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Arthur Joseph Johnson, 3 brothers, Ole Johann Anderson* who died young, Johann Christian Mosby, and Carl John Mosby, 2 sisters, Bertha Josephine Mosby who died as an infant, and Bertha Begine Reierson** and two nieces, Gladys Reierson and Bernice Vick.

She is survived by her husband, Edward, 2 sons, Elmer O. Johnson of Postville, Iowa and Archie G. Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and a daughter, Doris (Mrs. Duaine) Palas of Luana, Iowa; 7 grandchildren and 2 nephews, Alphie Reierson and Orvin Reierson.

Note: * Ole Johann Anderson's name is the old Norwegian pattern where his last name is the first name of his father with "son" added to it rather than his last name being Mosby. Andrew Mosby also went by his Norwegian name Anders. Thus Ole became Anders son or Anderson.

**It was also common when a child died, the next child (if it was the same sex) would also receive the first name of the deceased sibling. This is why there are 2 Bertha's.
