Funeral services for Hila June Dean, age 73, were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 18 at the First United Methodist Church in Fayette, Iowa. Hila's death occurred Friday, December 14, 2001 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa after a brief illness. Rev. Peggy Ellingson conducted the services. Casket bearers were Dale Roberts, Clifford Olson, John Pleis, Carroll Turner, Robert Owen, Lavern Thyer. Honorary Casket Bearers were Dub Glew and Marvin Ingles. Flower committee was Leota Turner, Lorraine Smith, Norma Glew, and Lavera Owen. Interment was in the Grandview Cemetery in Fayette, Iowa.

Hila was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Donald Martens, one sister, Alma Yates, and one nephew, Gary Yates.

She is survived by her husband, Delbert of Fayette, Iowa; her 4 children, Danny Dean of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Darwin Dean of Fayette, Iowa, Denise Dean of Spokane, Washington, and Dennis Dean of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; 1 granddaughter, Annamarie Dean of Virginia Beach, Virginia; 1 grandson, Michael Dean and 1 great-granddaughter, Christina Dean of Baltimore, Maryland; 6 step-grandsons and 2 step-granddaughers, 6 step-great-grandsons; and 2 brothers, Lloyd Martens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and LaVern Martens of Marion, Iowa.

Hila June, the third child of Frank Daniel and Edith Mae (Bowers) Martens, was born October 31, 1928 near Hopkinton, Delaware County, Iowa. She lived on a farm near Strawberry Point, Iowa until 1932 when her family moved to a farm four miles west of Arlington, Iowa. She attended Smithfield #9 school until the second semester of her eighth grade year when the family moved to a farm south of Fayette, Iowa. Hila graduated from the Maynard High School in 1946. She moved to Waterloo, Iowa and worked for the DAV and John Deere.

On December 26, 1946 she was united in marriage to Delbert Dean at the Little Brown church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Danny Dean in 1948, Darwin Dean in 1951, Denise Dean in 1952, and Dennis Dean in 1959. Hila and Delbert both worked at John Deere until March of 1948. They returned to Fayette and rented the Milo Schneider farm for four years. They then bought the former Stepp farm, two miles north and the first place west of Fayette in 1952. She always helped on the farm. Delbert and Hila moved to Fayette, Iowa in 1992. Hila was a member of the Kil Kare Klub, Pleasant Ridge Driving Club, and a couple of card clubs.
