Ruth Alice Metzger

Ruth Alice (Schneider) Metzger, 97, died April 27, 2011, at West Bend Care Center in West Bend, Iowa. She was a resident of Elgin, Iowa, prior to moving to West Bend in May 2003, where she lived at the Prairie Creek Assisted Living until 2009 when she then entered the West Bend Care Center.

Ruth was born November 11, 1913, at Elgin, Iowa. She was the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (Gehring) Schneider. She attended rural schools as a child and graduated from Elgin High School in 1930. After high school she attended Upper Iowa University where she received a teaching certificate. She taught in several rural schools in Fayette County prior to her marriage.

She was married to Ervin Metzger on October 6, 1946. Five children were born to this union. Ruth worked with Ervin on the farm and raised the children. She also worked for several years at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union, Iowa.

Ruth was baptized in the Apostolic Christian Church when she was a young girl of 17 and remained a faithful member until her death. She enjoyed a simple life and some of her greatest pleasures were hearing from her students that she taught and spending time in her garden and kitchen. Not only was she a school teacher but she was a teacher by example on how to live a life for the Lord.

Survivors include her four children, Mary (Leland) Plattner, Zapata, TX, David (Carolyn) Metzger, Dakota, MN, Philip (Julee) Metzger, Elgin, IA and Eunice (Daniel) Fehr, West Bend, IA; one son-in-law, James, (Karol) Meyer, Sabetha, KS; 16 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Curtis, Minneapolis, MN and one brother, Robert (Bernice) Schneider, Postville, IA.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ervin Metzger in 1989; one daughter, Jean Meyer in 2005; two sisters, Marie Schneider, Eleanor Butikofer and four brothers, Allen Schneider, Arthur Schneider, Laverne Schneider and Jake Schneider.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Elgin, Iowa.

Burial will follow in the Apostolic Cemetery in rural Elgin, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 29, 2011, from 4-8 p.m. at the Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elgin, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin, Iowa, is in charge of arrangement.
