OELWEIN - Funeral services for James Alfred Stewart will be 11
a.m., Thursday, Dec. 19, at Christ United Presbyterian Church, Oelwein
with the Rev. John Kerr officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery,
Oelwein.
Friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m., Wednesday
at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein,
and one hour before services Thursday at the church.
Mr. Stewart, 87, died at his home Monday morning,
Dec. 16, 1996, of natural causes.
He was born Jan. 14,1909, in rural Oelwein, the
son of A.W. and Alice Edna (Gager) Stewart. He
graduated from Oelwein High School in 1927. Mr.
Stewart farmed all his life in the Oelwein area..He
married Florence Shaw on June 15,1930,in Oelwein.
She died Feb. 25, 1994. Mr. Stewart was a lifelong
Oelwein area resident, a member of Christ United
Presbyterian Church, Hebron Masonic Lodge #374
A.F. & A.M. where he was past worshipful master in 1965, a member of
the Oelwein York Rites Bodies, a longtime Farm Bureau member, past
state president of the Iowa Soil Conservation Commissioners,' past
president of the Iowa-South Dakota chapter of High Twelve, national
trustee of the Walcott Foundation for High Twelve, and past president of
the Oelwein Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include two sons, James (Norma) of Oelwein, and Alvin
(Karen) of West Union; one daughter, Maryann (Alanson) Gibson of
Clermont; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence; an infant
son and infant daughter; and a sister, Mary Bess Shaw.Oelwein Daily Register - 17 Dec 1996
