- Archie Wilson Stewart, son of James and Sarah Jane
McCarney Stewart, was born at Limevady county Derry,
Ireland, on January 14, 1881 and died at his farm home
near Oelwein on May 3, 1956 at the age of 75 years,
three months and 19 days.
- When he was three years old he came with his parents
and brothers and sisters to Independence, where his
family made their home until 1895 when they moved to
a farm near Oelwein. In 1899 they bought the present
farm home where he lived until his death, except for
four years during which he resided in Oelwein.
- On September 8, 1904 he married Edna Gager who
preceded him in death on December 31, 1917. To this
union were born two children, Marybess (now Mrs. E. B.
Shaw) and James Alfred, both of Oelwein. On June 4, 1919
he married Janett King, who remained his faithful
companion until his death.
- For the past 11 years he had been an elder in the First
Presbyterian church in Oelwein, with which he united at an
early age. Earlier he had served as a trustee for many
years. He was associated with the Oelwein Farmers
Creamery for 40 years, during which time he was its
president continuously for more than 34 years. He was a
director of the First National Bank of Oelwein, a member
of Rotary International and of Hebron Lodge of Masons,
a Knight Templar and a member of the Order of Eastern
Star.
- He is survived by his wife Janett King Stewart; a daughter,
Marybess (Mrs. E. B. Shaw); a son James Alfred Stewart; four
grandsons, Stewart and Robert Shaw and James and Alvin
Stewart, a granddaughter, Mary Ann Stewart and a sister,
Elizabeth (Mrs. John Lindsay).
- Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the
Presbyterian church with the pastor, the Rev. L. W. Hauter,
in charge. The following served as casket bearers; Harold
Zeigler, Rodney Miller, Ira Jipson, Henry Davis, Harry Flower,
and Herb Rechkemmer. Interment was at Woodlawn cemetery.
