Sarah Jane McCarney Stewart was
born Oct. 31, 1839 in Kilray in northern
Ireland and passed, away Sept.13, 1927
at her home in Oelwein, 7 5th Ave. SE.
In her next birthday in October she would
have been 88 years old.
She was the youngest of four daughters
born to Archie and Elizabeth
McCarney. From her father and
mother she inherited those sturdy
qualities so characteristic of the
Scottish, people.
On January I6th, 1872 she was united
in marriage to James Stewart and
with her husband moved to Newton,
Ireland. To this union four children
were born; M. H. Stewart, and Margaret
Rudd of Eugene, Oregon and
Elizabeth Lindsey and Archie Stewart
of Oelwein, all of whom are still living.
- About 48 years ago she with her
husband and children came to this
country and settled in Independence,
Iowa. It was about 1894 the family
came to Oelwein where she has resided
ever since.
- The farm where Archie Stewart
and family now reside was their home
until after Mr. Stewart's death in 1899
when she moved to her present home
on 5th Ave. SE.
- Mrs. Stewart was a woman of very
strong convictions and her ideals were
high. Early in life she united with the
Presbyterian church and all her life
she showed herself a staunch and devoted
follower of her Savior. She loved
her home and her church and was
always willing to make, sacrifices for
them.
For the last 14 years she has been
an invalid confined most of the time
to her home.. Her mind was a storehouse
filled with precious truth from
the Bible.
- She leaves to mourn her loss besides
her four children, four grandchildren;
Charlotte and Miriam Rudd
of Eugene, Oregon and Marybess and
Alfred Stewart of Oelwein, Iowa, and'
three step children and their families
of Independence, Iowa.
Funeral services were held from the
Presbyterian church on Sunday afternoon
conducted by her
pastor Rev. Hauter and the body was
laid to rest in Woodlawn: by the side
of her husband.
