MAYNARD
Robert Brown was born in the north of Scotland in
1820, with his parents moved to Nova Scotia in 1828,
from thence to New Jersey where in 1841 he was
married to Diana Hillyer. They moved to Iowa in 1855
and in 1862 Mr. Brown enlisted in Co. Q 24th Iowa
Infantry, serving three years. He was wounded at
Champion Hills. In 1881 Mr. Brown moved to Maynard
and since that time their home has been here. His wife
died 15 years ago. Ten children were born to them, five
of whom are living and with the exception of Joseph
(whose home is in Missouri) live in this vicinity. His death
occurred at the home of his son, William, March 13.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Thursday,
March 14th and very largely attended. He had been a
consistent Christian for 65 years. Reynolds G.A.R. Post of
which he had been a member for years attended the
funeral in a body and conducted their Ritual services at
the grave. A delegation Reynolds W.R.C. were also present.
About five weeks ago Comrade Osgood was laid to rest,
thus taking two in a short time from the rapidly thinning
ranks of the old veterans.Oelwein Register - 20 March 1907
