Obituary --- After a brief illness of only a week, Mrs.
Esther B. Osgood died at her home in Maynard Sunday,
April 9th and was eighty two years, three months and
six days old at the time of her death. The writer has no
knowledge of her early life and does not know how
many of her own family survive her. She was married to
James S. Osgood in Townbridge township, Allegan county,
Michigan, December 3, 1879. In 1885 they moved to
Maynard, Iowa, which has since been their home. Her
husband, James, died in February 1907 and since his death
she has continued to live in the same house. She
entered the home in Michigan as a second wife to help
raise three orphaned boys, or really two of them, Charles
and William, the youngest Elliott, going to live with his
grandparents. She was a loyal wife and faithful in the
home. She was by nature timid in meeting strangers and
as she grew older this made her a recluse but she prized
very highly her few friends and neighbors who were loyal
to her through all the years and who always did what they
could to help her. She regretted deeply that her sons had
to be separated from her but always kept in close touch
with them by correspondence. She was a member of the
Christian church and continued in the faith to the end.. In
on of the first evenings that her son Charles worshiped
with her during the last week they were repeating the
twenty-third Psalm. When they came to the phrase, "Thy rod
and thy staff they comfort me", she stopped to say it again,
as the evident expression of her faith. She would wish that
her membership in the Womans Relief Corps be mentioned
and she prized their help and fellowship.
The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. W. T. Walker of the
Oelwein Christian Church and the services were held in the
Presbyterian church of Maynard Wednesday afternoon and
burial was made in Long Grove cemetery.
