Katherine Pearl Borland Shaffer, daughter of Alonzo and Clara Borland, was born at Fayette, July 23, 1885. Her education was received in the public schools of Fayette and Hawkeye. In 1902 she moved with her parents to Oelwein and while there was married Aug. 6, 1903, to Fred Shaffer of Fayette. To this union were born two children- Eckert and Max, who with the bereaved husband mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Shaffer had been in failing health since September and up to the time of her death had suffered keenly, but all that the kindly and devoted care of loved ones could do, could not avail and on March 4, 1915, the great Saviour of souls took her home. With the husband and children both her father and mother and five brothers mourn her loss. It is sad to give up one so young and so much needed, but in our grief we stil have faith in the wisdom and goodness of God and so with the patriarch we will say in humility, "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord." The funeral of Mrs. Shaffer will be held Tuesday, March 9, and burial made in Grandview cemetery. George Shaffer, a brother of Fred, is expected to arrive today (Monday) from Corvallis, Ore.
