Schuyler Jasper Maynard 1839-1927 Civil War Veteran

Schuyler Jasper Maynard was born
in Broome county, New York April
10, 1839 and departed this life Friday
afternoon, February 25, at the
advanced age of 87 years, 10 months
and 15 days.
He was the oldest son of Henry T.
and Charity R. Maynard who removed
to Belvidere, Boone county, Illinois,
in the spring of 1845, his mother dying
in 1847. In 1851 his father came
to Fayette county and was the first
person to enter land in Harlan township.
The family remained in Illinois
until 1861, then came here and occupied
their farm... On March 31,
1864, the deceased enlisted in Co. C.
Sixth Iowa Cavalry and remained in
the service until October 17, 1865
when he received his discharge with
the members of his company—all but
two, Hiram Foster and Thomas Reeder,
have answered the last roll call.
Mr. Maynard was united in marriage
with Miss Sarah Rich on September
19,'1866, and this union was blessed
with-.one son George who with the
widow and mother survivors. The
family farmed until October 1903
when they moved to our village because
of' Mr. Maynard's affliction
from sciatic rheumatism from which
he suffered until his death. While he
was able to be about with the aid of
a cane and later on crutches. He was
confined to his home since August
1921 and spent his days in a wheel
chair. While his health had been
gradually failing for several years
no immediate danger of death was
feared until Thursday. February 10,
when he was compelled to take to his
bed and his end appeared to be very
near at hand, relief from suffering
and helplessness coming near the
close of the day on the 25th.
Besides the widow, who is in very
poor health, and the son, deceased
leaves one brother and four sisters.
After brief services at the home, public
services were held at the Presbyterian
church on Sunday afternoon.

double quartet of the church furnished
beautiful - and appropriate
music after which, with six sons of
veterans as pall bearers, his body was
taken Long Grove cemetery and
placed in the family lot.
