- Scott V. R. Graves, who for thirty years has been a
familiar figure upon the streets of our city, departed
this life Friday morning, June 2, 1922. He had not
been feeling as well as usual for a week or more, but
his condition was not considered alarming until the
morning that he "Passed On", so not only his loved
ones were shocked and saddened, but the whole
community as well.
- Mr. Graves was born January 28, 1843 in Stephenson
County, Illinois. Thus he had reached the ripe age of
79 years, 3 months and 28 days. When he was a small
boy his parents moved to Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
Here he grew to manhood. At the age of 21 he enlisted
as a soldier of the Civil War and serviced during the last
year in Co. H. 49 Wisconsin voluntary infantry.
- He was the youngest of 8 children all of whom lived
to a ripe old age. March 7, 1866 he was married to Miss
Julia Hall of Jefferson county, Wisconsin and a month
later they came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Fayette
county near Alpha. In November 1890 they came to
Oelwein, which has since been their home. They were
parents of four children -- two sons having died in
childhood. Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by
the two daughters, Mrs. H. M. Abbott of Oelwein and
Mrs. Edna McKee of Chicago both of whom were present
at the time of his death. He also leaves three grand-
children and several great grandchildren besides a host
of friends to mourn his departure.
- Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in
charge of the pastor Rev. W. Kirwin and interment was
made in Woodlawn Cemetery.Oelwein Daily Register - 5 June 1922
